Flexible Seating in Middle School: 2018 - 19 Classroom Setup

September 2, 2018 No comments

Last school year was an adventure in flexible seating. The students did amazing with the seating options. This school year I wanted more of a coffee house vibe. Below is a glimpse into my classroom.

The papasan chairs are one of the most popular options. I do have to warn the students to be careful of how they are sitting on the chairs.

The wobble stools are items that I was able to get funded through Donor's Chose. The students love this option.

I finally broke down and purchased a futon. At first I thought only about three students could get on the futon. It is hilarious seeing about four of them squeeze on the futon.

The blue spinning chair is a yard sale find. My mom was with me and laughed at me buying the chair.

The library this school year is a hot spot. I added some Genre Posters and took extra care in organizing the library.

Check out my cafe theme Whiteboard Protocol Labels. The labels really helped set the theme of the classroom.

Thanks for stopping by and taking a peek into my classroom! Leave any comments or questions below.

Daily 3 in our Middle School Classroom

One of the many things I am looking forward to for the upcoming new year is our Daily 3. I am sure some of you are wondering what is the Daily 3 and how is that going to affect me this school year. The Daily 3 is a literacy rotation that will happen Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday in our classroom. It consists of Read to Self, Word Work, and Work on Writing. The great part about these stations is the freedom of choice. You will get to chose which station you will go to first, and once you get to the station you will have the option to chose what you complete and/or read.

This is where mutual trust comes into play in the classroom. I have to have trust in you that you will complete your assignments in a respectful manner which I know you will do. You as the students will have to trust that I am spending my time wisely and furthering your reading goals while I am working in small groups. Speaking of reading goals each one of you will have reading goals throughout the year. We will set those goals within the first quarter of the year. Once we meet those goals we will work towards some new reading that have been set.

During the first weeks of school you will hear a lot about about our Daily 3. There are going to be a lot of fun parts to the lesson such as read alouds, writing letters on cool paper, and fun games with our vocabulary. I am so excited about our Daily 3! I would love to hear your thoughts about what the Daily 3 will look like in our class. Please post a comment below or share your thoughts with me after class.
